Theater makes Noise in Pasadena

Rep theater company has raised $10.1 million

While many legit theater companies are struggling, a Noise Within broke ground on a new home this week in eastern Pasadena. After years of fundraising, the classic rep theater company has raised $10.1 million of the needed $13.3 million.

The 300-seat, 33,000 sq. ft. venue, designed by Radio City Music Hall architect Edward Durell Stone, will stand on ground donated by SMV Technology Partners near the metro Gold Line.

The company is slated to move in time for its 20th season and will finish the 2010-11 season at its existing theater in Glendale.

The move comes just as the beleaguered Pasadena Playhouse launched a fundraising drive for its longterm financial health.

A Noise Within is one of the country’s few repertory companies of solely classic literature. Org plans to offer a broader range of educational opportunities in its new theater. The ceremony comes after years of fundraising efforts. Among the key gifts were donations from the Ahmanson Foundation and the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation. In all, there were nearly 1,000 donations to the capital campaign.

Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard hailed the new entity. “The coming of A Noise Within to Pasadena marks a new era in the city’s cultural life,” he said. “With its distinguished artistic resources, including renowned theaters, Pasadena happily welcomes a Noise Within as one of the premiere theatre companies in the western United States. Playgoers and pupils will benefit enormously from A Noise Within’s classical repertory program.”
