SYDNEY — After more than a decade at the helm, Melbourne Theater Company topper Simon Phillips has announced he will leave the company at the end of the 2011 season.
Phillips has achieved both artistic and practical goals while at the MTC and was integral to getting the company’s A$55 million ($49 million) new home on the city’s Southbank Boulevard off the ground, providing the first permanent home for the MTC.
“The major goals I had for the company have been reached, we have a theater of our own, new premises for our administration and the highest subscription base in the country,” Phillips said of his exit. “So now it’s appropriate that someone with a fresh energy and vision take the company forward into its next decade.”
During his tenure Phillips increased the MTC subscriber base by 75%, from 12,000 subscribers in 1999 to more than 21,000 subscribers.
An international search for his replacement is underway.
