Broadway is so much more liberated than Hollywood.

Nathan Lane waited until after his Golden Globe-nominated turn in “The Birdcage” failed to ignite his movie career, and then he came out. He went on to win his second Tony, for “The Producers.”

After long TV stints on “Sex and the City” and “Frasier,” Cynthia Nixon and David Hyde Pierce made the big announcement sometime before their Tony-winning perfs in, respectively, “Rabbit Hole” and “Curtains.” And after nearly a decade of playing gay on “Will and Grace,” Sean Hayes came out in The Advocate on the eve of his Broadway debut in “Promises, Promises.” Do we spot a Tony trend here?
