Ahmanson gets ‘Normal’

L.A. stop launches musical's national tour

The national tour of Broadway tuner “Next to Normal” will launch in November at Los Angeles’ Ahmanson Theater.

A musical about a woman struggling with bipolar disorder, “Normal” is more challenging material than most tuner fare and seems a potentially risky bet for some regional markets. On the other hand, it received an enthusiastic response two years ago in a pre-Rialto run at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C.

Road incarnation will play the Ahmanson Nov. 23-Jan. 2 ahead of engagements in Seattle, St. Louis, Philadelphia and D.C., among other stops.

The Broadway staging of “Normal” recently made it into the black, recouping its capitalization costs of around $4 million.
