‘Equivocation’ nabs critics award

Margulies, Zacarias plays receive citations

Bill Cain’s play “Equivocation,” which concluded its Off Broadway run produced by Manhattan Theater Club on Saturday, has picked up the Steinberg/American Theater Critics Association’s New Play award.

Kudo comes with a cash prize of $25,000. Citations, each worth $7,500, went to Donald Margulies’ “Time Stands Still,” also produced by MTC this season, and Karen Zacarias’ “Legacy of Light.”

Award, announced annually during the final weekend of the Humana Festival of New American Plays at Actors Theater of Louisville, considers scripts that preemed professionally outside of Gotham during the prior calendar year.

“Equivocation,” a fictional comedy-drama about Shakespeare, bowed at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in April. “Time Stands Still” was first seen at the Geffen Playhouse in L.A. in February 2009. “Legacy” opened at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., in May.
