Gaul’s Quad Films, which teamed with Focus Features Intl. to produce “Heartbreaker,” is lining up Gerard Depardieu starrer “Small World.”
“World” will be co-produced by Germany’s Blueprint Films, said Blueprint producer Amelie Latscha. Gregoire Melin’s powerful Gallic sales house Kinology has taken international sales rights on “World.” Mini-major Rezo has taken distribution in France; “World” is the third feature directed by Quad’s Bruno Chiche (“Hell,” “Barnie’s Minor Annoyances”). Quad is producing with Orange production arm Studio 37 in France. “World” is supported by the France-Germany co-production fund. Orange Cinema Series has taken French pay TV rights. A French-language psychological thriller, “World” has Depardieu as an Alzheimer’s sufferer whose ever-stronger recall of childhood memories makes him remember a secret that would destroy the life of a woman of now large social standing. That endangers the man’s life. Nathalie Baye (“Tell No One”), Alexandra Maria Lara (“Farewell”), Niels Arestrup (“A Prophet”) and Francoise Fabian (“Rapt”) co-star. Rolling Feb. 22, “World” adapts the novel of the same title by Swiss author Martin Suter. “Suter is a popular German-language author, so ‘World’ naturally invites a German co-production,” said Latscha. “World” is a mid-cost film for France, budgeted at around Euros6.5 million-Euros 7 million ($9.2 million-$9.9 million). Kinology is already handling another Quad productions: “Heartbreaker,” a runaway hit at the Unifrance Paris Rendez-Vous in January.
