World Briefs: Biz strong at Disney parks

Reliance Big to produce 'Electric City'

Oriental Land, which manages Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, has reported a 5.3% uptick in combined admissions at the two parks for the first half of the fiscal year, from April to September.

The 12,954,000 visitors rep the second-best first-half total since Tokyo Disneyland opened for business in 1983.

Oriental Land attributed the good numbers to park-friendly weather during the period, as well as to popular new attractions, including the revival of “Captain EO” featuring Michael Jackson.

Indian billionaire Anil Ambani’s Reliance Big Entertainment has pacted with Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s Playtone to produce “Electric City,” an Internet toon series, online social game and mobile application.

Conceived and written by Hanks, “Electric City” will look at the future of civilization, covering themes like energy consumption, freedom of information, crime and punishment.

Reliance’s gaming arm Zapak, which has 7 million subscribers, will manage the project. Joshua Feldman and Bo Stevenson will co-produce.

Reliance has an existing development deal with Playtone.
