Women in Film: Courteney Cox

Lucy Award for Excellence in Television

Don’t be surprised if Courteney Cox does a pratfall at this year’s annual Women in Film Awards. After all, she’s getting a prize named after the ultimate female TV comic, Lucille Ball.

“Like her, I love physical comedy and would do just about anything to get a laugh!” Cox says. Getting laughs has transformed Cox from actress to television mini-mogul, as she carves out an admirable career that follows in Lucy’s footsteps. Cox parlayed her “Friends” clout to produce TV shows, including her current hit series “Cougar Town.” It was a natural progression, the 45-year-old explains: “I do feel being creatively involved as a producer was very important to me at this stage of my career.”

And she’s done it all as a staunch supporter of Women in Film.

“I’m a proud WIF member,” Cox says. “It’s important to support women in everything we do, or want to do. Being part of a group that encourages women to reach their highest potential in our business. It’s very important for women to support each other in this industry, and I’m proud to be a part of a female-driven comedy like ‘Cougar Town.'”

She’s proud to be a working mother, too. Cox and husband David Arquette have a 5-year-old daughter, Coco, and Cox believes that being a hard-working woman in film is the best role model her child could have.

“I hope that when Coco grows older, she will feel that I’ve always been an active and present mom, but will also be proud of me for having a career and ambitions of my own as well that are unrelated to parenthood,” says Cox.
