On Sunday afternoon, Lupe Ontiveros kicked off the 25th Imagen Awards by reminding the Beverly Hilton aud that she’s not a “stereotypical Latina.”
As the thesp explained it, “I’m tall, I’m gorgeous and I have a lot of huevos!”
Kudo winners for their positive portrayals of Latinos included America Ferrera for “Ugly Betty,” Danny Pino for “Cold Case” and “La Mission” director Peter Bratt, who also received the Norman Lear Writers Award. Lear, too, was honored as one of Imagen’s founders at this silver-anniversary ceremony.
During the event, hosts and presenters alike took jabs at nominee “Dog Whisperer” Cesar Millan. Comedian Ric Salinas suggested, “I got a show. It’s set in the barrio called ‘The Cockroach Whisperer.'” Thesp Enrique Castillo asked, “Can a Latino really whisper?” Even Millan joked, “Everybody asks me, ‘Can you rehabilitate my husband?’ That’s a new show… ‘The Macho Whisperer.'”
