Twentieth Century Fox pumped up the testosterone levels on Aug. 25 when it bowed Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete,” rolling out the cast and crew in souped-up low riders in front of downtown’s Orpheum Theater.
Bad-ass thesp Danny Trejo led the charge on a Harley Davidson hog clad in the title character’s blade-touting leather vest.
“I didn’t even want to wear this tonight,” Trejo admitted. “Then (Robert) gave me this look, the same look I used to give my kids when they were messing up, and I said, ‘Oh, OK Robert, I changed my mind.’?”
Rodriguez returned the compliment to Trejo, saying, “You could rock climb this guy’s face.”
Several Rodriguez alum showed up to tubthump the pic, including Quentin Tarantino, helming partner Ethan Maniquis and co-stars Jessica Alba and Cheech Marin.
” ‘Desperado’ was such a big part of my life,” Rodriguez said before introducing the film. “It was the first time I worked with Cheech, the first time I worked with a man named Quentin Tarantino, and it was also the same time I came up with the idea for ‘Machete.’?”
The new Fox pic is very special to the helmer.
“This is the first time in my career that a movie has taken on a life of its own,” says Rodriguez. “The people asked for it, so we had to go out and make it.”
