VC Multimedia acquires ‘Complexo’

Firm amps up acquisitions for foreign sales

VC Multimedia, the distribution and international sales arm of Portugal’s Valentim de Carvahlo Group, is moving into third-party pickups for foreign sales.

Launched in 2008, it has focused on selling titles from sister production house VC Filmes.

First acquisition is “Complexo — Parallel Universe,” a docu feature that portrays Rio de Janeiro’s biggest favela slum, Complexo de Alemao.

“Complexo” was directed by Mario and Pedro Patrocinio, who lived in the giant favela from 2005. As Rio’s police force launched its largest operation ever against drug cartels in the Complexo, the brothers interviewed denizens ranging from a gang leader to a single mother, a funk artist and the president of the residents’ association.

VC Multimedia is now looking to acquire more documentaries for international sales, said sales exec Marta Vaz de Sousa.

At the Berlinale, VCM has also moved “The Dictator’s Secret Passions,” a fiction feature about the mistresses of Portuguese ruler Antonio de Oliveira Salazar, and “First Adventure in the Haunted House.”

“Haunted House” is a children’s adventure pic and local B.O. success, selling 150,000 tix in Portugal. Its helmer, Carlos Coelho da Silva, directed “The Crime of Father Amaro,” the highest-grossing Portuguese film ever, and “Amalia, the Movie,” also a hit.
