Josh Dickey will be joining Variety as film editor, beginning Jan. 3.
He will oversee the team of film reporters, directing coverage and making decisions on both breaking news and analytic pieces. Dickey will report to deputy editors Brian Cochrane and Cynthia Littleton, collaborating with them to develop strategies on the film coverage and helping to create a more dynamic web presence.
His most recent stint was as deputy editor at website TheWrap, overseeing daily news operations and managing the contributions of staff writers and freelancers. Before that, he was at the Associated Press from June 2000 through March March 2009, most recently as entertainment editor.
The move is part of Variety’s ongoing bolstering of the newsroom. In the past two months, four Variety vets were upped to deputy editor status in a reorg of the newsroom, while the film reporting staff was beefed up with three reporters.
“We talked to a lot of candidates, but Josh impressed all of us with his energy, enthusiasm and ideas on how to handle news,” said Variety group editor Tim Gray. “He’s going to play a key role in our coverage of all aspects of the film biz, while his understanding of the web world is going to be invaluable in helping us revitalize the breaking news on the web.”
Aside from its domestic news, Variety continues its extensive international coverage, which has become increasingly important. It also runs more than 2,000 reviews annually, and has revved up such areas as music, tech and legal. Besides the ongoing revamp of its web coverage, Variety is the only trade paper to appear daily in print.
