Veiroj's romantic comedy is up for Oscar nomination

Uruguay has opted to send Federico Veiroj’s romantic comedy “La vida util” (A Useful Life) to represent the country at the Foreign Oscars race.

A committee led by the national film institute Icau and producers‘s org. Asoprod selected Veiroj’s pic over six other contenders.

Set against the backdrop of a theater on its last legs, “La vida util” follows an overworked film programmer whose infatuation with a woman transforms his life.

Veiroj’s sophomore pic is a Cinekdoque presentation in co-production with Spain’s Mediapro and Versatil Cinema.

Submissions for the foreign-language film Oscar must reach the Academy by 5 p.m. on Friday. Nominations will be announced on Jan. 25. The 83rd Academy Awards will be held at the Kodak Theater on Feb. 27.
