‘Up’s’ heart, soul wins adults

Nostalgic opening spans decades-long relationship

While it may have been colorful birds, talking dogs and a floating house that attracted children to Pixar’s 10th film, it was the story’s heart and soul that won over adults. In the span of four short minutes, audiences witness the decades-long relationship of Ellie and Carl Fredricksen: from the awkwardness of their wedding day and the pride of buying a home, to the tragedy of child loss and the death of a lifelong partner. And it’s all accomplished without even one word of dialogue being uttered. As visually stunning as this montage is, its power lies in its message: That in the end, all anyone wants is to find that one person to share their life with. “Up” is so good at delivering that message that it leaves children wondering why Mommy and Daddy are crying in the middle of their cartoon.
