Fox Searchlight will release Terrence Malick’s long-awaited pic “The Tree of Life” on May 27, 2011.
Starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, drama centers on a son (Penn) and his complicated relationship with his father (Penn). Jessica Chastain rounds out the cast.
“Tree,” which wasn’t ready in time for Venice or Toronto, was acquired by Searchlight earlier this year from Bill Pohlad’s River Road Entertainment. Pic had been the only remaining release at troubled Apparition Films, which had slashed the majority of its staff at the time.
“This is a signature film by a signature filmmaker and we are proud to be releasing it,” said Searchlight presidents Stephen Gilula and Nancy Utley at the time of the acquisition.
No word yet on whether or not the studio plans on taking “Tree” to Cannes, which bows May 11, 2011.
Malick, meanwhile, is currently shooting his next feature: an untitled project starring Javier Bardem, Rachel Weisz and Ben Affleck.
“The Tree of Life” is produced by Pohlad, Sarah Green, Pitt, Dede Gardner and Grant Hill.
