Film Independent sets deadline for kudos submissions

The Spirit Awards are moving back to Saturday, setting Feb. 26 as the date, after a one-time shift to Friday night ceremonies.

Film Independent made the announcement Wednesday but did not disclose the time or venue. A spokeswoman said those decisions will probably be disclosed later this month.

This year’s gala featured a pair of notable shifts — a new location at the L.A. Live complex downtown rather than the usual beachside site and an evening start instead of its previous Saturday midday launch — as part of an effort by the Film Independent org to herald its 25th anniversary.

In keeping with tradition, the 26th Spirit Awards will take place the day before the Academy Awards.

Film Independent also announced Wednesday that it’s accepting submissions for the 26th Spirit Awards with an early deadline of Sept. 13 and a final deadline of Oct. 5.

Only films made for $20 million or less are eligible for the Spirit Awards. “Precious” monopolized this year’s awards, copping five trophies including best feature, director for Lee Daniels, actress for Gabourey Sidibe, supporting actress for Mo’Nique and first screenplay for Geoffrey Fletcher.
