Smith sets ‘Camp Rules’

'Legally Blond' scribe to make helming debut

“Legally Blonde” scribe Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith is set to make her helming debut with the Paramount comedy “Camp Rules.”

Smith will write the screenplay with journalist/novelist Deanna Kizis. Project, which is based on Jordan Roter’s young adult novel, brings together “Paranormal Activity” producer Jason Blum and Ivan Reitman’s Montecito Pictures.

Smith isn’t entire new to helming. She directed the short “The Spleenectomy,” which starred Anna Faris and Ron Livingston. The pic, which was financed by Glamour magazine, caught the eye of Paramount president Adam Goodman, who is keen on breaking in tyro helmers.

Roter wrote the original adaptation of the screenplay, which chronicles the exploits of 16-year-old Penny Moore during her 8-week stint at a girl’s camp in Maine.

Montecito’s Tom Pollack, Jeff Clifford and Ali Bell are also producing alongside Tracy Underwood.

Smith is one of the busiest female scribes in Hollywood, with credits that also include “The Ugly Truth,” “The House Bunny” and “10 Things I Hate About You.” She’s currently adapting “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” for Universal with longtime writing partner Karen McCullah Lutz.

Kizis, the former West Coast editor of Elle magazine, has written several novels including “How to Meet Cute Boys.”

Smith is repped by Paradigm, and Kizis is handled by Gersh. They are both additionally managed by Seth Jaret.
