German funding agency to back Bollywood sequel
BERLIN — Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is heading to Berlin for his next pic, “Don 2,” the sequel to his 2006 hit thriller about a street singer hired to impersonate a dead crime lord.
Farhan Akhtar is back to helm the sequel, which is being produced by his Mumbai-based Excel Entertainment along with Mathias Schwerbrock’s local shingle Film Base Berlin. The first “Don” was a remake of a 1970s pic starring Amitabh Bachchan.
Regional subsidy org Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg is backing the production with E550,000 ($697,778).
At February’s Berlin Film Festival, Khan had said he was eager to shoot in the German capital and hoped to lense his next pic here. The 50-day shoot is set to start in late autumn on location throughout the city.
“Don 2” is the latest international production to shoot in and around Berlin following such recent high-profile pics as Roland Emmerich’s William Shakespeare drama “Anonymous” and the Liam Neeson thriller “Unknown White Male,” from Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra (“Orphan”).
