Screen Gems has boarded the bestselling young adult book series “The Mortal Instruments” with an eye to a possible film franchise, starting with the first installment, “City of Bones.”
Unique Features Robert Shaye and Michael Lynne optioned the series last year, with Constantin joining the project last October.
Pic is penned by Jessica Postigo, with Constantin’s film and TV head Martin Moszkowicz exec producing and Robert Kulzer producing.
Lynne and Shaye will also produce, along with Dylan Sellers as exec producer, through their Unique Features banner.
The “Mortal” series includes four books by Cassandra Clare about a seemingly ordinary teenager who discovers she is the descendent of a demon-hunting clan called Shadowhunters.
Set in contempo New York, “City of Bones” follows the character Clary Fray as she searches for her missing mother and encounters a city filled with supernatural creatures.
Screen Gems brings otherworldly experience to the “Mortal” franchise. The company’s undead series “Resident Evil” has grossed north of $500 million worldwide. Though every studio would like its own “Twilight” franchise, other fantasy series such as “The Golden Compass” haven’t spawned sequels.
