Sarajevo fest focus on southeastern Europe

Lineup reflects 'intellectual responsibility'

LONDON — The 16th Sarajevo Film Festival announced its competition lineup Thursday with an emphasis on features from southeastern Europe that reflect what it calls “intellectual responsibility.”

“The program consists of nine films from very different authors in terms of experience, aesthetic approach and the way they view the world,” the festival said. “What they have in common is something very new in regional cinema: intellectual responsibility towards film, society and their work.”

The competition films include four world premieres: Austrian helmer Barbara Eder’s “Inside America,” about an American high school near the Mexican border where drugs and violence collide with the American dream; Nedzad Begovic’s “Jasmina” (Bosnia and Herzegovina), about a woman and her granddaughter fleeing wartime Sarajevo; Jasmin Durakovic’s “Sevdah for Karim” (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Croatia), a post-war love triangle set in Sarajevo; and Serbian Nikola Lezaic’s “Tilva Rosh,” a coming of age drama set in a decrepit former copper mining town.

There are five regional premieres: Agnes Kocsis’ “Adrienn Pal” (Hungary, Netherlands, Austria, France), about an overweight nurse in search of a childhood friend; Szabolcs Hajdu’s “Bibliotheque Pascal” (Hungary, Germany, Romania, U.K.), about a woman forced to work as a prostitute in England; Kornel Mundruczo’s “Tender Son — The Frankenstein Project” (Hungary, Germany, Austria) about a boy who turns murderer after his family rejects him; Radu Muntean’s “Tuesday, After Christmas” (Romania), where a cheating husband finds himself confronted by his wife and mistress; and Yagmur and Durul Taylan’s “Vavien” (Turkey), a black comedy about a family drowning in debt.

The fest runs July 23-31.
