Modern Master Award: James Cameron
The “Avatar” helmer has been selected to receive the fest’s highest honor, which he will be presented Feb. 6 at the Arlington Theater. Director of the Year: Kathryn Bigelow Bigelow, whose film “The Hurt Locker” recently won the Producers Guild Award for best picture and who was named by the DGA as best director, will discuss her career on Feb. 8. Montecito Award: Julianne Moore Moore is being feted Feb. 11. Montecito Award recognizes a performer who has given a series of classic and standout performances in their career. Performance of the Year: Colin Firth Firth, star of Tom Ford’s “A Single Man” and an Oscar nominee for the first time, will receive his plaudits Feb. 13. American Riviera Award: Sandra Bullock Bullock had an outstanding 2009 with “The Proposal” and “The Blind Side” and receives her kudo Feb. 5. Award recognizes actors who have had a strong influence on American cinema. Other SBIFF honorees include Peter Sarsgaard, Christoph Waltz, Stanley Tucci and Vera Farmiga (Cinema Vanguard Award, taking artistic risks) and Carey Mulligan, Saoirse Ronan, Gabourey Sidibe and Michael Stuhlbarg (Virtuosos Award, distinguished perfs in 2009). Documentary “The Cove,” about the abuse and killing of dolphins in Japan, receives the David Attenborough Award for excellence in nature filmmaking.
