S. Africa chooses ‘Life’ for Oscars

Pic won Prix Francois Chalais in Cannes

“Life, Above All” will be South Africa’s entry for the foreign film Oscar.

Pic was selected by the South African Academy Award Selection Committee and the National Film and Video Foundation.

Directed by Oliver Schmitz (“Paris, je t’aime”), “Life Above All” is based on Allan Stratton’s novel “Chanda’s Secret.” It premiered in Un Certain Regard at Cannes, winning the Prix Francois Chalais for dedication to the values of life affirmation and journalism.

Thirteen-year-old Khomotso Manyaka, a first-time actress who plays the lead role of Chanda, won best actress at the 31st Durban Intl. Film Festival.

Thandi Brewer, a member of the judging panel, said, ” ‘Life, Above All’ is a beautiful movie about strength, survival, friendship, love and all the good things about Africa, set against the backdrop of the unfortunate things about Africa.”

Pic was produced by Dreamer Joint Venture Filmproduktion in co-production with Enigma Pictures, Senator Film Produktion and Niama-Film.
