‘Return,’ ‘Incendies’ light up Valladolid

Kiarostami's 'Certified Copy' shares top prize

Valladolid, Spain– Argentine Miguel Cohan’s “No Return” proved the main winner at the 55th Valladolid Film Festival, which wrapped Saturday, sharing fest’s top Golden Spike with Abbas Kiarostami’s “Certified Copy.” Cohan also took new director.

Denis Villeneuve’s gripping drama “Incendies” emerged as another major Valladolid victor taking screenplay and the main Competition youth jury and audience awards – key kudos for Spanish distribber Alta Films which picked up “Incendies” from Toronto.

Valladolid’s special jury award was snagged by Jasmila Zbanic’s immigration-drama “On the Path.”

Jesper Christensen took home best actor for the Danish drama “A Family”; best actress went to Spain’s Emma Suarez for her portrayal of a unhinged mother in Agusti Vila’s Karlovy Vary winner, “The Mosquito Net,” which also took a runners-up Silver Spike at Valladolid.

U.S. helmer Daniel Anker won Valladolid’s prestigious and ever-stronger Time of History docu section with “Voices Unbound: The Story of the Freedom Writers.”

Babak Najafi’s Swedish character-drama “Sebbe” topped the fest’s Meeting Point contempo pic panorama.

A pacy revenge thriller, “Return” played in theaters to standing ovations. Its award announcement at Saturday’s press conference in Valladolid was met by thunderous applause.

Indian film director Adoor Gopalakrishnan, the main Competition jury president, called “Return” “a powerful psychological thriller that reflected the torture of every character.”

Latido will bow sales on “No Return” at the American Film Market.

Buyers will be looking for more Argentine thrillers after Juan Jose Campanella’s Oscar-winning “The Secret in Their Eyes” made substantial B.O. over much of the world, including a banner $6.4 million at the U.S. box office for Sony Pictures Classics.
