Tarsem Singh to helm pic based on Brothers Grimm story
Relativity Media announced it has finalized a deal with Tarsem Singh to direct its untitled Snow White feature, based on the Brothers Grimm story and written by Melissa Wallack.
Relativity isn’t wasting any time. It’s prepping the project, with principal photography set to begin in March.
Project reteams Singh and Ryan Kavanaugh’s Relativity, in post-production on “The Immortals,” which Universal opens Nov. 11, 2011.
Relativity’s Snow White project will eschew the traditional story in favor of an edgier, more modern tale. After her evil stepmother kills her father and destroys the kingdom, Snow White bands together with a gang of seven quarrelsome dwarves to reclaim what is rightly hers.
Company, however, is keeping storyline details under wraps for competitive reasons. There are two other studio Snow White projects in the works: U’s “Snow White and the Huntsman” and “Snow White and the Seven” at Disney.
“Working with Tarsem on ‘The Immortals,’ I have never been involved with a more visceral director,” Kavanaugh said. “To do Snow White correctly, attention to detail is key.”
