Puerto Rico sends ‘Lie’ to Oscar

Mercado's helming debut will vie for foreign language nom

Puerto Rico is sending Rafi Mercado’s directorial debut “Miente” (Lie) to vie for a nomination in Oscar’s foreign language category.

Psychological thriller tracks a shy, young artist who straddles the worlds of fantasy and reality to survive a chaotic life in the city.

A special independent committee led by Rafael Mediavilla, prexy and founder of the Puerto Rico Film School, selected the Isla Film production over five other pics in the running.

Nominations will be announced on Jan. 25. The 83rd Academy Awards will be held at the Kodak Theater on Feb. 27.
