Gerry Porter, senior vice president of Hanson & Schwam PR for the last 15 years, died May 24 in Los Angeles of complications from lymphoma cancer. He was 79.

After graduation from New York U. and a two-year stint as a radio broadcaster in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Porter started in showbiz as a page at NBC in New York.

Later he became well-known for his campaigns on many major studio features, including, notably, “Inherit the Wind.” He also was in charge of publicity for Monte Hall’s “Let’s Make a Deal” and was a longtime studio publicist for Paramount Pictures and United Artists in New York.

His last assignment for Hanson & Schwam was representing Sunset-Gower Studios, formerly Columbia Pictures.

He is survived by a son, a daughter and four grandchildren.
