Pedro Rodrigues' transvestite tale wants Academy's love

Joao Pedro Rodrigues’ “To Die Like a Man,” produced by Rosa Filmes, is Portugal’s candidate for foreign film Oscar nomination.

The film premiered in Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2009. Based on the true story of Lisbon transvestite Ruth Bryden, who died in 1999, the film tells the story of veteran drag queen Tonia, who becomes embroiled in an unexpected love affair.

“To Die Like a Man” won best film at the Buenos Aires Independent Film Festival.

Pedro Rodrigues will receive a tribute in the New Director section of Brooklyn Academy of Music’s 2010 Next Wave Festival, which runs Oct. 6-8,

Submissions for the foreign language Oscar must reach the Academy by 5 p.m. on Friday. Nominations will be announced on Jan. 25. The 83rd Academy Awards will be held at the Kodak Theater on Feb. 27.
