Adventure thriller set up at Focus Features
Focus Features Intl. has added a project to its slate of films for sale in the market: Adventure-thriller “Tiger,” which Guillermo Arriaga (“Babel”) is adapting from John Vaillant’s upcoming nonfiction tome.Darren Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures and Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment are producing for Focus Features and Random House Inc.’s Random House Films division, which have a co-production partnership. Films co-produced by Focus and Random House Films are jointly owned, with Focus holding worldwide distribution and sales rights. Vaillant’s book, to be published Aug. 24 by Random House imprint Alfred A. Knopf, is set in the Siberian plain, where one tiger rebels against human development that’s threatening the habitat. When townspeople are tracked and hunted by the tiger, who exhibits almost supernatural power, a conservationist game warden must face down the feline. No director has been confirmed for the project, which re-teams Focus and Arriaga, who worked together on “21 Grams.” “We’re delighted to be collaborating again with Guillermo Arriaga, one of the most compelling storytellers working today,” said Focus CEO James Schamus. Producers are Protozoa’s Mark Heyman, Ari Handel and Aronofsky, and Plan B’s Jeremy Kleiner, Dede Gardner and Pitt. “This is the first time I have adapted a screenplay, since I have previously only written original screenplays. I chose to adapt this story because I have a profound love for the outdoors and the intense tension between man and nature, which the book reflects,” Arriaga said.
