Helmer to receive Milestone award

The Producers Guild of America has tapped James Cameron as recipient of its Milestone award for his contributions to the entertainment industry.

The kudo will be presented Jan. 22 at the PGA’s 22nd annual award show at the Century Plaza in Los Angeles.

“James Cameron is an exceptionally talented producer — a true innovator with the rare combination of technical ingenuity and creative vision,” said Paula Wagner, chair of the 2011 PGA awards. “Jim has continued to change the film landscape with his ability to deliver groundbreaking masterpieces that present audiences and the industry with unrivaled beauty, originality and impact.”

The PGA noted Cameron’s “Avatar” holds both the domestic and worldwide box office records with over $2.7 billion at the global box office, beating Cameron’s “Titanic.” He broke into the business by working on Roger Corman’s “Battle Beyond the Stars” in 1980, then wrote “Rambo: First Blood Part 2,” “Aliens” and “The Terminator,” on which he landed his first directing gig.

Cameron subsequently directed “Aliens,” “The Abyss,” “Terminator 2″ and “True Lies” before taking on “Titanic.”

Past recipients include Clint Eastwood, Walt Disney, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Alfred Hitchcock, Brian Grazer and Ron Howard.
