PGA announces docu nominees

'Superman,' 'Tillman Story' among feature docu contenders

The Producers Guild of America has tapped half a dozen title as nominees for its documentary award.

The films are “Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer,” directed by Alex Gibney; “Earth Made of Glass,” directed by Deborah Scranton; “Inside Job,” directed by Charles Ferguson; “Smash His Camera,” directed by Leon Gast; “The Tillman Story,” directed by Amir Bar-Lev; and “Waiting for Superman,” directed by Davis Guggenheim.

“Earth Made of Glass” and “Smash His Camera” weren’t included by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ on its short list 15 films eligible for the Oscar.

“Waiting for Superman” won the National Board of Review’s award for top documentary on Thursday and is the top grosser among docs with $6.3 million. The Gotham Awards tapped “The Oath” — which wasn’t shortlisted by AMPAS — as the doc winner this week.

Nominations for the other PGA categories will be announced Jan. 4 along with the individual producers. The PGA Awards ceremony will take place Jan. 22 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The PGA began recognizing documentaries four years ago with “Sicko,” “Man on Wire” and “The Cove” taking the trophies so far.
