CBS Films is in negotiations for a remake of hit Spanish thriller “Celda 211” with Paul Haggis in talks to produce and pen the adaptation.
Haggis will produce the film under his Hwy 61 Films banner, with partner Michael Nozik.
The Spanish film, directed by Daniel Monzon, was released last year and centered on a rookie prison guard who turns up for his new prison job a day early and is knocked unconscious by a falling chunk of ceiling. He’s rushed to cell 211 and awakens to find a rebellion in progress, led by a convict (Luis Tosar) whose name translates as “Bad Mother.”
“Cell 211” won prizes for picture, director, actor for Tosar at the 24th Spanish Academy Goya Awards, Spain’s equivalent of the Oscars. It also won the adapted screenplay prize for Jorge Guerricaechevarria and Monzon, who worked from the novel by Francisco Perez Gandul.
Haggis directed, wrote and produced “The Next Three Days,” starring Russell Crowe and due out next month from Liosngate.
