Helmer David O. Russell will receive the director of the year nod at the 22nd Palm Springs Film Festival awards gala in January.
Russell’s most recent work, Mark Wahlberg-Christian Bale starrer “The Fighter,” is inspired by the true story of boxer “Irish Micky” Ward (Wahlberg) and his half-brother Dicky (Bale), who helped train him.
Russell previously directed Wahlberg in “Three Kings” and “I Heart Huckabees.”
Past recipients of the kudo include Alexander Payne, Ang Lee, Jason Reitman, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Anthony Minghella and Sean Penn.
Palm Springs fest awards will be presented at a Jan. 8 gala ceremony.
