At premiere, Wahlberg insists he's got street smarts

New York

With a screening in his hometown of Boston slated for the following night, Mark Wahlberg was eager to protect his tough-guy rep after the Aug. 2 world premiere of Columbia’s cop comedy “The Other Guys” at N.Y.’s Ziegfeld Theater.

Director Adam McKay got Wahlberg going by saying co-star Will Ferrell would make the better police officer.

“I wouldn’t want to mess with Will,” McKay said during the after-party at Chelsea’s the Park. “He’s not in control of his emotions. He doesn’t really know what he’s doing. He’s the kind of guy who thinks he’d have to be tough and hurt someone.”

Wahlberg’s response: “Where? On what planet? I can’t see that happening. (Will)’s got no street smarts.”

On his way out the door, Wahlberg took it one step further: “Will would be a victim.”

With two divergent opinions, it was time to go to an impartial observer — the white-collar criminal pursued by Ferrell and Wahlberg in the movie, Steve Coogan.

“Mark obviously, if he calmed down a little,” Coogan replied. “He’s pretty fearless. He’s genuinely tough whereas Will’s not.”

So there you have it. Wahlberg’s reputation is safe — if you can trust an actor playing a Wall Street tycoon.
