Events to raise money for charity

Oscar Night America, an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences program that allows local charities to host Oscar viewing parties, has named the 50 cities that will host events, including Atlanta, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami and New Orleans.

Among other cities in the program are Boston, Dallas, Houston, San Diego, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

The program was started in 1994 and has since raised nearly $30 million for a variety of charities, with last year’s event bringing in more than $3 million.

Only one charity party in a given media market may participate in the program, and the events are entirely produced by local nonprofit organizations with local ABC-TV affiliates participating as well.
