‘Nightmare’ scares away competition

Reimagined horror franchise grabs the top spot on Friday

Friday night was a dream for New Line Cinema and its latest franchise horror pic, “A Nightmare on Elm Street.”

The R-rated reboot grabbed the No. 1 spot at the box office with an estimate of $15.9 million at 3,332 locations, far outpacing any other films in the top 10. The estimated figure for the reimagined film includes numbers from Thursday night’s midnight showings, which account for roughly $1.6 million in ticket sales.

“Nightmare’s” closest competitor was the Paramount and DreamWorks Animation 3D toon “How to Train Your Dragon,” which took in an estimate of $2.6 million in 3,426 engagements. Fox’s “Date Night” was in the No. 3 slot, with an estimate of $2.5 million in 3,093 runs. “The Back-up Plan,” a Jennifer Lopez starrer from CBS Films, grabbed the No. 4 spot with an estimate of $2.4 million in 3,280 runs. Rounding out the top 5 was the Warner Bros. pic “The Losers,” which gathered about $1.9 million at 1,923 locations.
