No response yet from distributor TWC

The MPAA has given upcoming Weinstein Co. release “Blue Valentine” an NC-17 rating.

The surprise decision, if it sticks, would hobble efforts to reach a broader audience with the pic beyond those not scared off by the adults-only rating. Derek Cianfrance’s film, starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, has been closely watched since garnering strong response on the festival circuit.

The time-jumping “Valentine” chronicles the dissolution of a marriage. Pic preemed at Sundance in January.

TWC and the filmmakers have not yet announced a plan of action; options include appealing the decision, submitting a new edit or releasing the film without a rating. A rep for TWC said a response was forthcoming.

The MPAA had no comment on the decision.
