Mood upbeat at PGA meet

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:

Despite my great affection and respect for Mr. Peter Bart — and notwithstanding Variety ‘s steadfast support of the Produced By Conference — I can’t let his small “Dewey beats Truman” moment go unnoted: In Bart’s June 7 column regarding Messrs. Jerry Bruckheimer and Brian Grazer, he referred to the conference (in the past tense, even though the column was posted before the event took place) as a forum for “wannabes commiserating about the dire state of their craft.” On the contrary, with speakers like Ted Turner, Mark Cuban, James L. Brooks and 130 other masters of their craft, our 1,100 attendees were endlessly inspired throughout the two-day celebration of the producing art. I invite Peter to join us next year, where perhaps the joyous spirit of the event will relieve some of his dyspepsia regarding the state of the profession.

Kind regards,
Marshall Herskovitz
president emeritus,
Producers Guild of America
