Universal boss, wife work Veterans Day at Camp Pendleton
Ron and Kelly Meyer got their hands dirty on Veterans Day.
The Universal Studios boss and his wife spent the day at Camp Pendleton, the Marine Corps base near San Diego, taking part in the Mission Serve initiative promoted by first lady Michelle Obama and nonprofit org Service Nation. It was something of a reunion for Ron Meyer, who was stationed at the base in 1964 during his time in the Marines but hadn’t returned there until Thursday.
The Mission Serve campaign encourages Americans to spend time on Veterans Day doing service projects for military families. That made for a good fit with Kelly Meyer’s Teaching Garden program, which she launched in 2004 to help fight childhood obesity.
The Meyers spent the day working with kids to create a garden at the base’s Mary Fay Pendleton Elementary School.
Later in the day, Ron Meyer applauded the Camp Pendleton kids for the sacrifices they make as their parents serve their country.
“You frequently change schools as your parents are stationed in different places, (and) your fathers and mothers may be overseas and away for some time,” he said. “So we want to thank you for your sacrifices.”
