Matthew Morrison on Anne Hathaway in ‘Love & Other Drugs’

Actors on actors

“She started out as a Disney princess, then did ‘Brokeback Mountain’ and ‘Devil Wears Prada.’ But even after seeing her ‘Rachel Getting Married,’ I wasn’t expecting this kind of turn.

When we first see Anne Hathaway in ‘Love & Other Drugs,’ she’s in a doctor’s office and she has a rash on her breast. And right away, she is just showing it all, totally unafraid. Jake Gyllenhaal is pretending to be a doctor and, when she finds out he’s not a doctor she hits him with a briefcase. It’s a great comic moment. Then later, because of her Parkinson’s, a glass of vodka falls from her hand and she lets out this primal yalp, and you know it’s only going to get worse.

It’s so tough to go in and out of comedy and drama the way she does in this film. It’s a powerhouse performance.”
