'Avengers,' 'Captain America' join 'Thor' in Hall H

As expected, Marvel Studios has assembled the Avengers.

Mark Ruffalo will play Bruce Banner, the scientist who turns into the Incredible Hulk when angry, while Jeremy Renner will portray Hawkeye.

The two are the newest thesps to join Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Chris Evans (Captain America). Samuel L.

Jackson will also reprise his ongoing role as Nick Fury and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) in the actioner that Joss Whedon will direct for summer 2012.

The cast took the stage for a joint photo op in Hall H to wrap up days of studio panels that have taken place each day at Comic-Con in San Diego since Thursday morning.

In fact, the overall theme of Marvel’s panel was to show how its upcoming “Thor” and “Captain America” films, both set for next summer with Paramount distributing, are connected and lead to “The Avengers.”

That tie-in is essentially the fantasy world of Asgard, the mythological Norse world where Thor, the home of the god of thunder.

Marvel has had to fend off doubts over whether the characters, who live in different worlds and time periods, could co-exist believably in one film together.

“By the end of this panel I hope that skepticism goes away,” said Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige.

The crowd in Hall H certainly didn’t object.

They sparked to the “Captain America” footage that gave a very brief taste of Evans in costume as the star-spangled hero.

“We only have one chance to tell the origins story of Captain America,” said director Joe Johnston who started lensing the pic a week ago.

A second sequence introduced Hugo Weaving as the villainous Red Skull and his pursuit of the powers of Asgard’s tree of life.

“I’m a Comic-Con virgin so thanks for having me,” said “Thor”-helmer Kenneth Branagh before bringing out Hemsworth.

Said Whedon on helming “The Avengers,” “I have had a dream all my life and it was not this good. I am going to blow it. I’m very nervous and need your love.”
