Mad for ‘Crazies’

Premiere spotlights horror-thriller with conscience

“The Crazies” invaded Hollywood Tuesday night when Overture bowed the Breck Eisner -helmed horror thriller at the Vista Theater on Sunset Boulevard.

At the posh Jeffrey Best -produced after-party on the KCET lot, lead Radha Mitchell hung with old friends, including her “Everything Put Together” helmer Marc Forster .

Mitchell, who hadn’t seen “The Crazies” until that night, described it as “Hitchcock on acid.”

Her co-star Danielle Panabaker praised genre gods George Romero , on whose original 1973 pic this update is based, as well as John Carpenter , with whom she just shot “The Ward.” “They are the grandfathers of this genre world, and they’re both still making films and still very relevant.”

Revelers also took up the “is it horror or is it a thriller” question. Pic’s serious issues of a small town’s contaminated water supply is what that drew socially minded Participant Media’s involvement, while the lure of boffo horror genre enticed distrib Overture.
