Studio teams with director for the 11th time on pic

Tyler Perry and Lionsgate are teaming for the 11th time on “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family,” based on his stage play.

Perry will reprise his signature role as Madea, as well as direct, write and produce.

Lionsgate will release “Big Happy Family” April 22, 2011. The stage play is currently on tour in the U.S.

“It’s very important to me to make movies that audiences can relate to, and I can’t think of a more relatable subject than family. I’m looking forward to bringing back Madea and the gang, and I’m glad to have Lionsgate with me for the journey,” Perry said.

Announcement was made by Lionsgate COO/Motion Picture Group presxy Joe Drake and Lionsgate Motion Picture Production prexy Mike Paseornek.

Perry’s 10th film for Lionsgate, “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf,” is set for release just three months before “Big Happy Family.” That film unspools in theaters Jan. 14.
