Two Eastern European territories have put up their Oscar nominations.
Latvia’s Academy Awards commission chose Maris Martinsons’ “Hong Kong Confidential,” produced by Krukfilms.
A love story that unfolds over one week, “Hong Kong Confidential” was released in Lavtia last week. International sales are being handled by House of Film.
Macedonia’s pick is “Mothers,” a montage of three stories that mix fiction and documentary genres, directed by Milcho Manchevski, the Macedonian Film Fund said.
The film — which follows the story of two nine-year-old girls who report a flasher to the police, a documentary team meeting the last two residents of a deserted village, and the rape and murder of a series of cleaning ladies — had its world premiere in Toronto this month.
Submissions for the foreign language Oscar must reach the Academy by 5 p.m. Oct. 1. Nominations will be announced on Jan. 25. The 83rd Academy Awards will be held at the Kodak Theater on Feb. 27.
