Kong-a-thon goes Universal

Three generations of simian pics grace ride opening

Universal execs including prexy Ron Meyer shared the red carpet with sequined “native dancers” and an albino python Tuesday when Universal Studios unveiled its “King Kong 360-3D” attraction. Three generations of Kong pics were represented as well. F/x vet Bob Burns carried in an original Kong armature from the 1933 stop-motion smash, telling reporters that Peter Jackson had insisted the original Kong come in to see himself. Thesp Bob McKinnon repped the 1976 Dino de Laurentiis version, and Jackson’s own digital version stars in the new attraction. A wan-looking Jackson appeared on 3D video, saying how much he enjoyed creating the ride.

Early reaction recalled the old Catskills joke: The ride was disappointing — and too short.
