Thesp also appears in helmer's 'Red State'

Kevin Smith has hand-picked thesp Nicholas Braun to star in the director’s upcoming indie hockey-themed pic “Hit Somebody.”

Smith, who had just worked with Braun in his on-deck horror pic “Red State,” made the “Somebody” announcement via his Hollywood Babble-On podcast with Ralph Garman.

Based on a Warren Zevon song, with lyrics by Mitch Albom, “Hit Somebody” centers on a so-so young hockey player who has a talent for bullying.

“He’s this really, really great actor who I love to death, and he is the perfect lead for this script,” Smith said of Braun during the podcast. Smith finished lensing “Red State” this month and plans to begin production on “Somebody” next summer.

Other than “Red State,” Braun also starred in 2005’s “Sky High” and can next be seen in Disney’s “Prom,” which is set to launch April 29.
