Josh Lucas is toplining “Red Dog,” an Australian production of a charismatic kelpie cannine who united a mining community in the 1970s and ’80s.
In addition to canine co-star Koko, Lucas joins Rachael Taylor, Noah Taylor, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Luke Ford, Rohan Nichol and Arthur Angel. Kriv Stenders (“Lucky Country”) is directing and Nelson Woss (“Ned Kelly”) and Julie Ryan (“Ten Canoes”) are producing.
“Red Dog” is scheduled to film for five weeks in South Australia followed by four weeks in the remote Pilbara region of Western Australia. Script’s been adapted by Daniel Taplitz (“Chaos Theory”) from the novel “Red Dog” by Louis De Bernières (“Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”).
Roadshow Films is planning a 2011 release.
ScreenWest, the South Australian Film Corporation and Screen Australia have invested in “Red Dog” along with support from Rio Tinto, Woodside, Skywest, Westrac and Pedigree.
