SHANGHAI — Hong Kong helmer John Woo will head the jury at the 13th Shanghai International Film Festival next month, and mainland China’s biggest film fest will feature a retrospective of his work and of Woody Allen.
The 54-year-old Hong Kong actioner connoisseur will chair the jury to announce the Golden Goblet award at the fest, which runs June 12 thru 20, the fest said in a statement. None of the other seven jurors were announced.
Shanghai’s fest has emerged as an important regional event because of the increasing importance of the Chinese film biz and a growing internationalism about the event, which attracts 200,000 visitors.
Woo is currently working on the chopsocky pic “Reign of Assassins” with Michelle Yeoh and South Korea’s Jung Woo-sung.
As of May 4, a record 2,327 movies from 81 countries and regions had entered their names for the fest’s Golden Goblet Award, the Asian New Talent Award and International Student Shorts Award.
