John Oliver on ‘ In the Loop’

by Armando Iannucci

One of my favorite movies of the year was “In the Loop.” Not only was it incisive and extremely funny, it also featured some of the most creative swearing cinema has ever seen. (Apparently Buster Keaton used to curse like a sailor whenever he fell over, but tragically the silent movie technology of the time was unable to pick any of it up.) Peter Capaldi’s character, Malcolm Tucker, uses swearing like jazz; it’s what Dizzy Gillespie would have been capable of if, instead of a trumpet, he’d had the word “fuck.” Armando Iannucci, the writer and director, is responsible for some of the best comedy in Britain in the last 20 years. He was a huge influence on me as I was growing up, and he has created a magnificent satirical script that perfectly demonstrates how flamboyant egos and slapstick logic can lead sensible nations to war.

John Oliver is a correspondent-writer for “The Daily Show.”
