‘Iron’ bows strong overseas

Early launch in six territories earns pic $2.2 million

Paramount and Marvel Entertainment have kickstarted what should be a red-hot international run for “Iron Man 2.”

Pic bowed early in six overseas territories Wednesday to the tune of $2.2 million on 960 screens, claiming the top spot in each market. France repped the only major territory to bow Wednesday, where the film grossed $1.6 million, outperforming the first “Iron Man” by 11%.

The early launch is a result of the first film’s day-and-date launch in May 2008. The summer season typically starts May 1, and with this year’s Stateside bow not happening until next week, the overseas roll out was timed to hit theaters before.

“Iron Man 2” will debut in a total 54 territories this weekend, a full week ahead of the Stateside bow. Key territories like Australia and Russia launch the film today, followed by the U.K. and Italy on Friday.

Pic is the first Marvel release under Disney’s new ownership, with Par distributing overseas.
