'Waste Land,' 'Bhutto' among docs to be feted at Dec. 3 event
The Intl. Documentary Assn. has named the recipients of this year’s special awards, to be given at the DGA Theater on Friday.
The IDA will fete Lucy Walker’s “Waste Land” with the Pare Lorentz award, and Duane Baughman and Johnny O’Hara with the ABC News VideoSource kudo for “Bhutto,” their docu on the late Muslim leader.
Other awards include the music docu prize to Jim Bigham and Mark Moormann for “For Once in My Life” and the David L. Wolper student docu prize to SFSU alum Oscar Bucher for “Waiting for a Train: The Toshio Hirano Story.” This year’s only tie is in the Humanitas category, feting Laura Poitras for 9/11 aftermath doc “The Oath” and Roberto Hernandez and Geoffrey Smith for “Presumed Guilty,” the docu that helped exonerate a wrongly convicted man.
Honorable mentions for the Pare Lorentz and David L. Wolper awards will go to Taggart Siegel for “Queen of the Sun: What Are the Bees Telling Us?” and Bagassi Koura for “The Stinking Ship,” respectively.
